Kenneth J. McGinniss passes Friday, October 13, 2006 |
My father, Ken, passed away last night, Friday, October 13, 2006.
Friday the 13th. Always the showman.
He went peacefully and quickly, after a long “battle” with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease. I say “battle” because one doesn’t fight ALS. It’s a terminal illness.
As my father put it, “I’m dying an inch at a time.”
Dad, you did good. You hung in there longer than anyone expected. And then, suddenly, you were gone.
No more fighting. Only peace.
God bless you.
[I want to sincerely thank those of you who have supported my father and my family for the many years we’ve been participating in the Walk to D’Feet ALS. It seems ironic, but my father went so unexpectedly–even though we’ve been expecting this for a few years–I haven’t yet thanked everyone for this year’s walk contributions. I will. And we sincerely appreciate your support. His battlle is over, the fight against ALS is not: http://web.alsa.org/site/TR?pg=personal&fr_id=1250&px=1008548. ] |

I recently watched “The Sea Inside.” If you don’t know the story, Netflix says, “Based on a true story, this moving film centers on a Spaniard, Ramon Sampedro, who’s condemned to life as a quadriplegic. Determined to die with dignity, Sampedro leads a 30-year campaign to win the right to end his life…“
This was a difficult movie for me to watch for two reasons. The first reason stems from my youth. When I was 15 years old, I broke my neck diving into a pool (not the ocean, as Sampedro did). What I didn’t know until I went to the hospital the next day (read The Whole Story for the whole story) was that it can take up to 48 hours for paralysis to set in.

I read a lot of self-development books and attend a lot of self-development seminars and I’m always surprised at how often the “experts” don’t do what they teach. I wonder, if it’s so good, why don’t they use it?
I recently posted the second of three articles about achieving goals. It is about discipline. (The first article is about focus and written goals.) Unlike some experts, I strive to practice what I preach and recently accomplished two significant balanced-life goals. The first was becoming a lifetime member at Weight Watchers. I joined in October 2005, lost 20+ pounds, and achieved lifetime status in March. I’m still on track, under my goal weight, and feeling and looking great!
