My name is Paul. I'm a volunteer
Hi. My name is Paul. I'm a volunteer "Big Brother" for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) or, in their lingo, a "Big."
My experience with BBBSLI began about 3 years ago but had its roots in two significant life events of mine that occurred in 2001. One was the end of my marriage and the other was, no surprise here, September 11th. Those two events inspired me to decide it was time to start giving back in a real and meaningful way, not simply continuing to donate money to worthwhile charities (which I also do), but really giving back by giving of my time, my energy and my attention in a way that directly benefited someone in need.
Since I love working and playing with kids, I began looking for charities/agencies that help children. BBBSLI was one that I had always heard of but never really knew that much about. So I sent in my request and was contacted to go through their screening process.
I have to admit, I was surprised at how extensive it was. But then I thought, if this was my son being matched with a volunteer, I'd want peace of mind that the person was well screened.
Thankfully, I "passed" my screening and after a short wait, was matched with my "Little" Patrick.
As in any relationship, the beginning was tricky. It took a long while for Patrick to feel comfortable with me. He was often quiet and not very talkative. My caseworker was a wonderful resource and kept encouraging me to hang in there.
I'm glad I did. Being a Big Brother has been one of the most gratifying volunteer experiences of my life. The best way I have to describe it is to say it's very much like planting a field. It requires a consistent effort on the front end, working at it week after week, watching for "weeds," feeding and nourishing it, and then waiting for the harvest. There are times when you wonder if anything will actually grow. But you feel good for the work you've put in (like you do after a good workout).
Then, as time goes by, you start to see your Little Brother growing, changing, right before your very eyes. And it's because of your time, your effort, your commitment, your presence, your attention.
Patrick and I still have a ways to go and we're making great strides. I feel a strong sense of accomplishment watching his social skills and his confidence grow.
While that's great for Patrick, the fact is there are hundreds of Little Brothers just waiting for a Big Brother, like you, to come into their life and make a difference -- to model what it is to be responsible, thoughtful, understanding, strong, caring, fun-loving. In short, a man.
My and Patrick's journey is underway. Why not join us?
